Chapter 6: Food and Cooking

These are links to relevant things that I mention briefly in Chapter 6.

Refrigeration

Outdoor Gear Lab is a great website for comparing camping, hiking, and other outdoor gear, and they have a good review of all of the higher-end (Yeti, Pelican, etc.) coolers. The ORCA Extra Heavy Duty ($400) is their top pic overall, with the Coleman Xtreme (variable price depending on size) being their budget pick.

Reputable manufacturers of portable 12-volt refrigerators that would be appropriate in an SUV include Dometic, ARB, Engel, and Whynter.

Cooking

This is the great little canister stove that I use. The stove fits inside of this little pot that comes with two cups (I purchased it at Walmart). I use this folding windscreen to keep wind from messing with the stove’s flame while I’m cooking.

Unconventional cooking methods

• Immersion water heater: RoadPro RPBH-012 12V Beverage Heater
• Lunch box stove: RoadPro 12-Volt Portable Stove (This thing gets surprisingly good reviews!)
• Folding solar oven: Sunflair Portable Solar Oven
